Schedule for Training
Contact provides 2 types of trainings:
  1. Suicide prevention and mental health
  2. Volunteer training

1. Suicide Prevention and Mental Health
  • Talk Saves Lives: An Introduction to Suicide Prevention
    A 60-minute, community-based presentation that covers the general scope of suicide, the research on prevention, and what people can do to fight suicide. Attendees will learn the risk and warning signs of suicide, and how together, we can help prevent it.

  • QPR Gatekeeper Training
    60-90 minute training teaches participants to recognize suicide warning signs, and how to question, persuade and refer someone to help.
    Dates to be announced.

  • safeTALK
    2.5 hour training helps participants identify people who have thoughts of suicide, apply TALK steps (Tell, Ask, Listen, KeepSafe) and connect them with suicide intervention provider.

  • Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)
    Two-day (15 hours) intensive, interactive suicide first aid workshop for community members, hotline counselors and other caregivers. The skills can be used on the phone or in person.

    The ASIST class on Feb. 26 and 27 is full and registration closed. The dates for the next free ASIST class will be announced soon.

  • Mental Health First Aid
    8-hour training (two half days) to enhance mental health literacy, decrease stigma of mental health problems, learn how to help a person in crisis.

    Our next class is

    • June 5-6 at Contact
      Tuesday, June 5, 12:30 pm to 4:45 pm
      Wednesday, June 6, 12:30 pm to 4:45 pm
      (You must attend both days)

    • Cost: $75. Space limited to first 20 paid registrants.
    • To register, please call 315-251-1400, ext. 108.
    • Classes will be held at Contact Community Services, 6311 Court Street Road, East Syracuse.
    • Class fee includes training manual and light refreshments.

  • Youth Mental Health First Aid
    8-hour training (two half days) for adults who interact with youth. Focuses specifically on normal adolescent development and common mental health challenges of youth. Like regular Mental Health First Aid, it also teaches how to help a young person in crisis.

    Our next classes are

    • May 1-2 at Contact
      Tuesday, May 1, 9 am to 1:15 pm
      Wednesday May 2, 9 am to 1:15 pm
      (You must attend both days)

    • June 18-19 at Contact
      Monday, June 18, 12:30 pm to 4:45 pm
      Tuesday, June 19, 12:30 pm to 4:45 pm
      (You must attend both days)

    • Cost: $75. Space limited to first 20 paid registrants.

2. Volunteer Training

  • Hotline Volunteer Training
    Classroom training, observation and apprenticing to become a volunteer on the Contact Hotline. Three-day weekend training fulfills classroom portion of the volunteer training.

    2018 Hotline Training Dates
    • Hotline training occurs three times per year:
    • Winter – February 16, 17, 18
    • Spring – June 1, 2, 3
    • Fall 2018 – September 28, 29, 30
    • All training day are from 9am to 5pm. Attendance on all three days is mandatory.
