Members of our staff are available to act as coaches to schools implementing PBIS www.pbis.org —a systematic approach to preventing and responding to school and classroom discipline problems. By reducing behavioral problems, PBIS creates and maintains safe learning environments where teachers can teach and students can learn. Each school adopts three to five behaviors on which to focus, for example "Be safe. Be responsible. Be respectful." All adults commit to teaching and modeling these behaviors.
The PBIS process begins with identification of the school’s challenges and priorities concerning behavior and safety. The coaches work with a school team made up of teachers, administrators and other staff to
- Develop school-wide systems to support the staff
- Create consistent expectations and discipline for students
- Promote positive behavior
In schools using PBIS, disciplinary referrals to principals’ offices usually drop significantly.
Contact Community Services provides PBIS coaching to 13 schools in Onondaga County.
