Primary Mental Health Project PMHP, Contact Community Services
Contact coordinates the Primary Mental Health Project (PMHP) for ten schools in the Syracuse City School District. PMHP is a research-based, early intervention program designed to

  • Help young students improve school adjustment and learning
  • Become more emotionally resilient
  • Develop better social skills

A screening process identifies primary-grade students who need school adjustment help. Carefully trained, closely supervised nonprofessionals (called Child Associates) establish a caring and trusting relationship with the children. Most participating children improve their school behavior and academic performance.

PMHP Success Story

Bill was a first grader who got into trouble almost every day in school. Despite his misbehavior he had an amazing ability to look and analyze the situation.

One day during our "play" session, we talked about why he thought he couldn’t get through the day without misbehaving. He thought it over. Then he said that maybe it was because he hung around with "Zachary," another boy in class who was "cool" but also misbehaved quite a bit.

I asked him if there was another boy in the class that he could be friends with—someone who did not get in trouble and did well in school. He thought about it and said that Henry paid attention in class and didn’t get in trouble. I suggested that Bill avoid Zachary and spend more time with Henry. He agreed to try. Immediately, Bill’s behavior began to improve. He still slips up occasionally, but overall, he has more good days than bad. —As reported by a Child Associate
