Student Targeted Aggression Replacement Training (START)
START reduces disciplinary referrals and in-school and out-of-school suspensions.

Student Targeted Aggression Replacement Training (START) is an evidence-based cognitive-behavioral intervention program for chronically aggressive students in K-12th grades. Students improve social skills, anger control and moral reasoning skills.

Learn to conduct a START group for targeted youth in your school, facility or organization. Through START, students learn:

  • Skillstreaming (behavioral component)—alternatives to handling trigger situations
  • Anger control (emotional component)—turning an angry response to a constructive or problem-solving response
  • Moral reasoning (cognitive component)—applying honesty, loyalty and other positive values to situations

This 12-hour training is presented in two six-hour sessions.

Benefits of START Training

  • START reduces disciplinary referrals and in-school and out-of-school suspensions.

  • Aggression is a learned response. When youth unlearn aggression and learn new ways to respond to difficult situations, behavior and academic performance improve.

Background
START is based on The Prepare Curriculum developed by Arnold P. Goldstein of Syracuse University in the 1990s. Because of its proven outcomes, The Prepare Curriculum’s Aggression Replacement Therapy is identified as a recommended program by the U.S. Department of Education, a validated program by the New York State Department of Education, a model program by the U.S. Department of Justice and by the American Correctional Facility, and an accredited program by the U.K. Home Office Probation Unit. It has been widely implemented both nationally and internationally in school, delinquency and mental health settings.
